How to choose a domain name: 10 tips for small business owners

choosing a domain

Knowing how to choose a domain name before you buy one saves you a lot of headaches later. If you’re new to websites, the process can feel overwhelming — there are dozens of registrars competing for your business and thousands of name combinations to sort through. These 10 tips will help you pick the right one without the guesswork.

1. Do your research before you buy

Even a few minutes of research makes a difference. Browse a few registrars to compare pricing before you commit. Popular or common names cost more — or they’re already taken. The goal is a name that fits your business and hasn’t been claimed yet. Good places to start: GoDaddy, NameCheap, or Domains Priced Right.

2. Make it easy to remember and type

Your domain needs to pass the phone test. If someone hears your web address out loud, can they type it correctly without asking you to spell it? Avoid hyphens, numbers, and unusual spellings. Also skip words with double meanings or double spellings — they create confusion before a visitor even reaches your site. Short and simple wins.

3. Keep it short

The longer your domain, the harder it is to remember — and the easier it is to mistype. A single well-chosen word is ideal, but you don’t have to stop there. If your first choice is taken, try adding a verb, adjective, or your town name. For example: cowlickleamington.com, cowlickwebsites.com, or websitesbycowlick.com. All of those work.

4. Use .com if you can

Most people assume websites end in .com. If you choose .net or .org, some visitors will type .com by habit and end up on a different site. That said, country-code extensions like .ca or .au are widely recognised and work well. Good branding can make any extension work — but .com is still the safest starting point.

5. Check your social media handles too

Once you have a name in mind, check whether the same handle is available on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Consistency across platforms makes it easier for people to find you. If your domain is cowlickleamington.com, the handle @cowlickleamington reinforces it every time someone sees it.

6. Consider including a keyword

If SEO is part of your plan, a keyword in your domain can help. It signals to search engines what your site is about. Take cowlickleamington.com — if someone searches for a web studio in Leamington, that domain is already doing some of the work. Think about your location, your trade, or your main service. One of those often belongs in your URL. For more on this, read our blog on getting to the top of Google Search.

7. Stay away from numbers

Numbers create confusion. People won’t know whether to type the digit or spell it out. If your business name includes a number, buy both versions and redirect one to the other. Also avoid the number zero — it looks too much like the letter O, and that costs you traffic.

8. Skip the slang

Your domain should make sense 10 years from now. Slang dates quickly, and what sounds clever today can feel awkward — or confusing to visitors from outside your area. Plain language works everywhere, for everyone.

9. Go easy on hyphens

Hyphens make a domain harder to say out loud and easy to forget when typing. If you need one, keep it to a single hyphen. More than that and the domain starts to look disorganised — and becomes a problem every time you tell someone your web address in conversation.

10. Set up auto-renewal right away

This one gets overlooked more than it should. If your domain expires and you miss it, your site goes down. If it stays lapsed long enough, someone else can buy it — and getting it back is expensive, if it’s possible at all. When you purchase your domain, turn on auto-renewal immediately and keep your payment details up to date. Or buy it for five or ten years upfront and take the issue off your plate entirely.

Take your time with this decision. Your domain is one of the few parts of your online presence that’s very difficult to change once it’s set. Get it right from the start and it’ll work for your business for years.
