Ask three web designers what a website costs and you can get three answers that are thousands of dollars apart. Sometimes someone is overcharging, but usually they are quoting different things.
Below are the usual price ranges for a small business website in Ontario in 2026, what you get at each price, and what to ask before you sign a quote.
The short answer
Most Ontario pricing guides put a professional small business website somewhere between $3,000 and $12,000. Below that you are usually looking at a DIY builder or a template site. Above it you are into online stores, booking systems and larger custom builds.
What you get at each price
DIY builders, a monthly subscription. Wix, Squarespace and similar tools. You do the design, the writing and the setup yourself. It can work well for a brand-new business testing an idea, as long as you have the time.
Template sites, from about $1,200. A designer sets up a ready-made template with your logo, colours and content. It’s fast and affordable. The trade-off is that your site looks a lot like other sites, and you usually write the content yourself.
Monthly website plans, from about $99 a month. The site is built for a low upfront cost and you pay every month for as long as you keep it. Check what happens if you stop paying, because on some plans the site goes with it.
Custom small business sites, from about $3,000. Designed for your business, usually five to ten pages, with the content written for you and the site set up for search before launch. This is where most local service businesses land.
Larger custom builds, from about $10,000. Online stores, booking systems, member areas, multiple locations or a lot of custom features.
What pushes the price up or down
- Number of pages. A page for every service and every town you serve adds up.
- Who writes the content. Writing is one of the biggest jobs in a website project. If the quote assumes you’ll supply all the text, the price will look lower.
- Features. Online payments, booking, quote tools and member areas each add build and testing time.
- Photos and branding. If you need a logo or a photo shoot, budget for those separately.
- Search setup. Page titles, descriptions, image alt text and a clean structure should be done before launch. Some quotes leave this out.
Costs after launch
Plan for these on top of the build:
- Domain: a small yearly fee. Register it in your own name.
- Hosting: a monthly or yearly fee. Very cheap hosting usually means a slow site.
- Updates and support: optional, often sold as a monthly care plan.
- Ongoing SEO: optional, if you want to keep working on your rankings.
Questions to ask before you sign a quote
- What is included, and what is extra?
- Who writes the content?
- Will the domain be registered in my name?
- Do I own the design and content when it’s done?
- What will I pay in month two, and every month after that?
- How long will it take?
If two quotes are far apart, these questions usually explain why.
